A massive fire erupted at a derelict heritage-listed building on Kingsway in Frome, Somerset, on Wednesday afternoon, July 1. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called at around 3pm, deploying eight fire engines, two water carriers, and two aerial ladders to tackle the blaze.
Locals have been urged to keep doors and windows closed amid heavy smoke in the area.
Historic Warehouse Ablaze
The three-storey warehouse at the Saxonvale site, described by a local architect as a rare heritage asset, was engulfed by flames. The building had been abandoned for decades and is located adjacent to an M&S store.
Jonny Buckland, an architect from nearby, called the fire “heartbreaking” for the community.
Firefighting Efforts
Firefighters from Frome, Castle Cary, Street, Shepton Mallet, and Wells stations used three main jets to combat the inferno. A safety cordon was established due to concerns over the unstable structure possibly collapsing onto the street and passers-by.
Smoke Advisory Issued
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Please keep your doors and windows closed if you live in the area due to the smoke.”
No Injuries Reported
Thankfully, there have been no reports of casualties. The focus remains on containing the fire and preventing further damage to surrounding premises.
